OUR ADVICE FOR CHOOSING

Some tips to help you make the right choices

At your place

Before coming to the workshop or shop, take the time to think about the following points:

Your environment : consider your interior. Is there space around the lamp that will receive the new lampshade? What is the ceiling height? At what height is the base placed? Will the lamp be seen from above (this is the case, for example, if it is placed on a coffee table) or from below (lamp placed on a desk or a tall piece of furniture)? What are the tones, materials, and style of the surrounding decoration?

Your lamp : Consider the lamp base, chandelier, wall lamp, or floor lamp that will receive the new lampshade. What is its shape, style, height, color, sentimental or monetary value? What materials is it made of?

Your lighting : in your space, is the light fixture intended to diffuse a soft ambient light, to focus attention on the lamp base or on a particular area, to allow office or writing work to be carried out, to illuminate an entire space?

At our place

When you come to our showroom-workshop at La Robellaz or boutique in Lausanne to choose your lampshade or pendant light:

Bring the lamp base and/or old lampshade if possible. The best way to choose a new lampshade is to start with the existing one, when possible. A good idea is to bring photos of your interior, a color chart of your colors or samples of the fabrics that decorate your interior.

Making the right choice : choosing the lampshade is a fun, but sometimes complex process. Indeed, there is no ONE truth. For each lamp, a multitude of options are possible. But here it is, you have to make a choice! With our years of experience, our templates and samples, we will help you make a GOOD choice.

Shapes and volumes : Dozens of templates are available in the store and showroom. They allow you to visualize in three dimensions all kinds of shapes and volumes on your lamp base.

Coverings, linings and finishes : once the shape and proportions have been decided, all that remains is to find a covering, a lining and a finish. To do this, the workshop and our shop have hundreds of samples of fabrics, papers, PVC, braids, bulbs (on sale at the workshop and boutique) that you can touch, compare, test under different lighting. These valuable tools facilitate decision-making and allow you to make the GOOD choice.

TO REQUEST A QUOTE

Do not hesitate to ask us for a quote. You can do this by phone at 079 637 68 64 or by email: info@vdevcreation.com

To answer you, and to the extent that you know all or part of this information, please specify when making your request:

1. The SHAPE of the lampshade to be restored or created

2. Precise or estimated DIMENSIONS

3. The TYPE of lampshade

1. The SHAPE of the lampshade

Here are the most common lampshade shapes: do you recognize the shape you are interested in? If not, check out the shapes under Techniques .

2. The DIMENSIONS of the lampshade

Specify in your request for quotation the dimensions a , b , c ( d is optional) of the lampshade to be (re)made. If the lampshade is to be created, dimension a will be sufficient for a price estimate.

a - diameter (a) or lower sides (a1/a2)

b - diameter (b) or upper sides (b1/b2)

c - slope

d - height

3. The TYPE of lampshade

There are two main types of lampshades that have very different manufacturing costs due to the price of materials and labor time: hard-back lampshades and soft lampshades.

How to recognize a hard-back lampshade
If the answer is YES to any or all of the following questions, it is likely that you want a hardback lampshade.

Examine the lampshade: is the outside rigid and covered with fabric (or another decorative material)? Look inside the lampshade: no metal branches between the top and bottom? Is the inside all smooth and stiff? Is the inside made of plastic or stiff cardboard?

Recognizing a soft lampshade
If the answer is YES to any or all of the following questions, it is likely that you want a couture lampshade.

Examine the lampshade: is the covering sewn (not glued) onto the frame: shaped in folds or on the contrary hyper-tight (like the skin of a drum)? Run your finger over the covering: can you guess the presence of metal rods welded at regular intervals between the top and the bottom? Look inside: you will discover a rather flexible fabric lining sewn onto the frame? The shape of the lampshade is concave, pagoda-shaped; convex, dome-shaped or bell-shaped; in complex curves.

TIPS & TRICKS

Choosing a lampshade is not always easy because there are so many parameters. Here are some rules to follow... or not!

Simplicity - The simpler the shape of the lamp base, the simpler the lampshade should be.

Unit - The shape of the base calls for that of the lampshade: a rounded base (ball, baluster, gourd, gourd, urn, barrel, etc.) calls for a conical or cylindrical lampshade. A square or rectangular base (or base) calls for a square or rectangular lampshade.

Diversity - Column lamp bases (tall and narrow) support almost any shape of lampshade.

Size - If you are unsure between two sizes of lampshade, opt for the larger of the two.

Versatility - Cone and oval shaped lampshades are versatile.

Modernity - The straighter and more open at the top the lampshade is, the more it gives the lamp base a modern twist. A cylinder is more contemporary than a conical one, a cube more modern than a square pyramid.

Geometry - Geometric shapes: angular and/or straight (cube, rectangle, cylinder, etc.) are suitable for contemporary lighting, which does not exclude combining them with classic lamp bases to modernize them.

Originality - Curved, convex, concave, scalloped frames (dome, pagoda, tulip, Alsatian, Spanish, Victorian, etc.) are more suitable for old or style lighting fixtures. But no fundamentalism! Treated with contemporary fabrics, colors, proportions, they become "sexy" and will make a show in any interior!

Dimensions - A lamp base placed on a low piece of furniture, seen from above, can give the impression of being crushed by its lampshade. This problem can be corrected by reducing the size of the lampshade and raising it slightly on the base (tucked in). The opposite procedure will be used when the lamp base is placed high up.

Proportions - Rule #1 is to trust your eye! There are some principles, but they don't apply every time, far from it! Nothing beats trying a template on the lamp base.

  • Ideal width of the bottom of a conical lampshade: minimum 2.3 times the width of the lamp base (measured at the widest point), but never more than the height (excluding socket) of the lamp base. Another calculation: 2 times the width of the lamp base + 2cm. Be careful, there are exceptions!

  • Ideal height for a conical table lamp shade: height of the lamp base excluding the socket x 40% to 60%.

  • Ideal height of a conical lampshade for a floor lamp: height of the lamp base excluding the socket x 30% to 50%. Another calculation: height of the lamp base excluding the socket divided by 4.
